Learn why driving in the fall can be dangerous and how to stay safe on the road.
The fall season is starting, and the roads are becoming more dangerous. Loose leaves, rainy streets and mud holes will soon appear on the road and unpredictable weather and shorter days could potentially be a challenge for some drivers. But don’t worry, Copart Germany has three tips for you to stay safe on the road. Here’s what you need to know when driving in fall.
#1 Slow Down
Picture this: it’s a bright and sunny afternoon and you are excited to get out of work and enjoy your drive home on a nice country road. But suddenly a storm clouds rolls in—it gets dark and foggy and you’re surprised by a sudden rainstorm. As the water pools on top of dust and oil, the road becomes more and more slippery. What should you do? Simple, make sure you drive considerably slower than you normally would. In addition, ensure you keep a good distance to the car in front of you and try to avoid sudden stops or turns while driving.
#2 Check Your Car
As dangerous as rainy roads and slippery leaves can be, nothing is more important than maintaining your car. Always make sure your car equipment is in a working order before going anywhere. Double check your headlights, taillights, and windshield wipers to make sure that they will work when needed. Cold fall mornings often lead to fog which can greatly limit your visibility, as well as the visibility of other drivers. Therefore, make sure to turn on your vehicle’s headlights which will increase both your own visibility and other drivers’ ability to see your car on the road.
#3 Stay Away from Puddles and Standing Water
Driving through standing water and puddles can cause aquaplaning. You could easily lose traction and slide across the road when it rains. The best way to avoid this is to drive around standing water areas if possible. If you can’t avoid it, having proper tires on your vehicle could be a life saver in rainy conditions. Regularly check the tread of your vehicle’s tires because traction on wet roadways can be significantly reduced by balding tires. Also ensure your tires are properly inflated so they won’t lose their grip. Always rotate or replace your tires as necessary.
These tips can help you stay safe and be prepared for the fall weather. Being safe on the road can make fall much more enjoyable.
