At Copart, we believe in Safety. We also know that safety matters to our customers.
To honor this, we have checked into some of the most popular cars brands searched for on Copart.de, and crossed referenced some popular models in our German inventory with industry renowned safety ratings. We have done this to bring you our top 3 safe luxury sedans!
For this article, we pulled data from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The IIHS is an independent scientific organization that conducts vehicle safety tests with the goal of educating the public and reducing the number of deaths and severe injuries resulting from automobile crashes. IIHS tests assess two important categories: “crashworthiness”, how well a vehicle protects its occupants, and “crash avoidance and mitigation”, referring to how well technology that can prevent a crash works to lessen its severity – Think ABS, speed sensitive adaptive steering, and collision avoidance systems.

Why Should you Care About IIHS Tests?
Did you know that the driver of a vehicle rated “good” in the moderate overlap test is 46 percent less likely to die in a frontal crash when compared with a driver of a vehicle that was rated “poor”?
The IIHS evaluates “crashworthiness” by conducting six individual tests. These tests are called the moderate overlap front, driver-side small overlap front, passenger-side small overlap front, side, roof strength, and head restraints & seats. Front-end crash evaluations are conducted through low- and moderate-speed track tests. According to IIHS.org, in order to be considered as a top safety pick, a vehicle must have “good” ratings in every one of these tests. It must also score an Advanced or superior rating for available front crash prevention, vehicle-to-vehicle, and vehicle-to-pedestrian evaluations. Headlights must also pass a rigorous standard and be classified as either having good headlights available, or standard (a necessary differentiator to be considered for the top safety pick + rating).

For our list of top-rated luxury sedans, we are choosing vehicles that made the cut for the top safety pick + rating. The top safety pick+ rating was introduced in 2013 and identifies the absolute safest vehicle choices on the market today.
Here are our top 3 picks:
Mercedes-Benz, C-class 4 door sedan, 2020
The Mercedes-Benz C class is a compact, luxury 4-door sedan with contemporary style, a luxurious modern interior, and great performance offerings. This model boasts a 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder that can produce 255 horsepower! Of course, we are most interested in this model for its high-performing safety ratings year after year (The C class was also a 2019 Top Safety pick + winner). With optional front crash prevention, the C class earned a superior rating in front crash prevention in both vehicle to vehicle and vehicle to pedestrian tests from IIHS.
BMW, 3 Series 4 door Sedan, 2019
The 2019 BMW 3 series comes with a lot of modern luxury features, such as adaptive suspension, laser-based headlights, a head-up display, and speed sensitive adaptive steering. It is also powered by a 2.0-liter, 255 horsepower, turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine and eight-speed automatic transmission. This model can go from 0mph to 60mph in just 5.6 seconds! However, lets get into the most valuable features, the ones that ensure safety for driver and family!
The 3 series was designed with safety in mind. In IIHS safety tests the 2019 BMW 3 series sedan earned a superior rating in front crash prevention in both vehicle to vehicle and vehicle to pedestrian tests with its standard system. One should note, however, that the headlight safety rating on this vehicle can vary by trim and options. Adaptive LED Headlights is an upgrade. Other notable safety features are the speed sensitive adaptive steering (this will give the car better grip in turns), BMW’s “Assist eCall” for emergency notifications, and standard frontal collision warning system.
Audi, A3 4-door Sedan, 2018
Our third pick is the 2018 Audi A3 sedan. The 2018 Audi A3 offers sporty handling with a turbocharged engine. It also has a modern, stylish interior and is a comfortable ride. Boasting a 220 hp engine and 258 lb.-ft of torque, the A3 certainly provides plenty of power. Even with its powerful engine however, the A3 still gets up to 26 miles to the gallon, or 11 kilometers per liter of fuel.
As far as safety goes, the Audi A3 is a top performer. This vehicle was rated superior in front end crash prevention: vehicle to vehicle with its standard system. Although, its headlights did not perform as well as our Mercedes-Benz and BMW picks.
